Ten easy ways to improve your relationship:
- Be kind. This means saying "Thank-you", "Please." "How can I help you?"
- Hug. Yes, research shows that people who hug feel safe and wanted.
- Listen when they talk. Really listen. Find out what they meant, not what they said.
- Do things as a couple. Together. Build memories that you can share. (plus, it is always cool to go back and see how different your memories of the same event are.)
- Leave your past alone. Do not answer any questions about a former partner. You are with your new partner, not your "ex-fill in the blank".
- Do not get sucked into each others birth families politics. Leave the sibling rivalries to the other siblings!
- Remember that is Her Mom you are talking about - so stop.
- Remember that is His Mom you are talking about – so stop.
- Forgive and forget. I mean forget. Do not bring it up later as “ammunition” for another fight.
- Fight fair. Only fight over the issue(s) – never bring up a personal failure or character flaw as a way to “win”, or you will surely lose.
